Memorial Day is a Federal holiday in the United States to honor the brave men and women who have served our country in war. It’s one of the sacred moments we take each year to commemorate those in the armed forces who have fallen in the line of duty.
The day was first celebrated in 1868 and was known as Decoration Day because it was a time where people would decorate the graves of military personnel who died in service to their country. For Americans, it has been an important tradition ever since.
Today, the significance of Memorial Day holds a special meaning unique to each of us, and as we band together we create newfound meaning and appreciation for the moment as a collective. Millions of patriots across Houston will gather to celebrate the lives and sacrifices that fallen soldiers have made for our ultimate freedom.
Celebrating Memorial Day Houston
This year, Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 30. Memorial Day creates a space for us to stop and think about the sacrifices women and men have made to ensure our lives are more safe and secure – not just today, but over and over again throughout American history.
With the cessation of lockdown regulations and requirements to practice social distancing during the pandemic, this will be the first year of the decade that Americans are able to unite, celebrate and pay their respects as one.
